It’s easy to understand how adding insulation to a home can save energy and money, but did you know it can also improve comfort and indoor air quality and reduce noise from outside? We talked with insulation professional Steve Cikach about what to expect when adding insulation to your attic and walls.
Why add insulation?
People have different reasons for adding insulation. Most people want to save money, but now people want comfort too, and that’s become an important concept with insulation.
Some people want to add insulation for soundproofing, as well. There’s also the health part of it. There are a lot of allergies and things of that nature to consider. When you’re in an uninsulated home, a lot of dust comes in from the attic and through the outlets. We get a lot of calls for that.
Types of insulation
At one time, attic insulation was the only insulation — no one ever considered walls. There was no specific code until the 1980s, when walls were required to be insulated. You wouldn't go outside in the middle of winter with just a hat on; you'd want a coat, too. A house is the same way. You want it to be insulated everywhere — whether it's your feet (crawlspace), coat (walls) or hat (attic).
When you install insulation, you get R-value. The higher the R-value, the more powerful the insulation. That means more savings, better comfort, better soundproofing and higher efficiency.
You want longevity with insulation. You don’t want to put something in your walls that will settle. You don’t want something without a vapor barrier that will absorb moisture and create other problems.
Finding a contractor
You want to find an established contractor and schedule a consultation. If you do your research, you'll find the right professional. Get referrals from friends and family, certifying professional organizations or trusted internet sources.
A quality contractor should be able to do the job in one day with as little noise and disruption as possible. We typically start in the attic, then drill out the walls and do whatever else is part of that project.
A good return on investment
In one day, you should see immediate results. Whatever the cost, it's probably the shortest payback and best return on investment you'll ever spend. You'd be hard-pressed to find something else that saves that much money every month with the added benefit of comfort.
